Item Description
: This auction is for 10 fresh seeds of the Massala Fruit tree, also known as Monkey Orange fruit.
This plant is a medium sized tree, usually it will remain at the range of up to 8 meters, and if pruned it will be much less. This fruit tree is native to much of Tropical and Subtropical Africa, and mainly in Southern Africa.
The fruit itself has a hard exterior and when opening it you'll find the orange-brown flesh and the seeds. the taste is sweet and tastes like a fruit sorbet, or fruit compote. fruit ripening season in Israel is just after the winter and into the early spring. after eating this fruit you'll have a nice taste in your mouth for a while. The ripe fruit is fragrant as well. The ripe fruit will fall to the ground and turn yellow, and when it is yellow and fragrant it means it is ripe and edible.
A tree grown from a seed will start producing fruits at the age of 5-10 years.
the picture below is of a fully grown tree in a city in south Israel (it is not the parent tree) in the desert. The tree in the 2 pictures below that one is of the parent tree grown in central Israel, not in the desert. The tree might shed most of it's leaves if the winter is cold and windy, but will re-grow afterwards.
Growing
: This plant is hardy to mild brief frosts, it can be grown almost anywhere in the tropics and the sub-tropics. will survive temperature drops to 26F.
It can grow in a wide variety of soils and will be doing good even in poor soils as long as the soil is a draining type of soil.
The plant requires full sun for best results. Can survive droughts when established.
