One of the most widely distributed works in the world. Each volume in this collection is not just another book on the respective field it covers, but rather constitutes an effective complement to the textbooks and scientific monographs already available to the medical student or professional. Much of the success of this work is due to the artistic and scientific skills of Dr. Netter, undoubtedly the best medical illustrator of all time. Netter's illustrations, simple, clear, didactic and artistic have proven to be the best visual complement for the total assimilation of new scientific concepts and technical advances made in current medicine. The scientific quality and the rigorous updating of each volume are ensured by the collaboration of relevant specialists of international prestige.
Frank H. Netter in 1989, published his Atlas of Human Anatomy, often referred to as Netter’s ‘‘personal Sistine Chapel.’’ Netter was born on April 25, 1906 in Brooklyn, New York, and at an early age displayed “an uncanny knack for making pictures.” He attended the City College of New York and studied art at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students’ League. He became a successful artist by 1920. However, with the death of his mother, Netter decided to honor her memory by enrolling in medical school at New York University Medical School. Netter started his collection of sketches as a young medical student. While in school, his personal sketches of anatomy and embryology on his notes came to the attention of his instructors and they asked him to illustrate articles and books authored by the faculty.
After graduation, Netter joined a private surgical practice but due to the Great Depression, could not afford to stay. He decided to leave the practice and become a full-time medical illustrator. As a formally trained physician and artist, Netter had a distinct advantage over most medical illustrators in that he approached each picture from the viewpoint of the clinician first and then as an artist. He drew over 4,000 illustrations and after the urging of many physicians and students, Netter dedicated his time to producing his Atlas of Human Anatomy. The textbook quickly became the best-selling anatomy atlas in North American medical schools and now has a following around the world based on its publication in 16 languages (Brass, 1984; Hansen, 2006). Netter was the recipient of numerous awards, including Honored member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists. He died on September 17, 1991 (Netter, 2013).
