"The first horse show ever held in the United States was at the original Madison Square Garden on East 27th Street. By the felicitous continuity of history, the 1977 National Horse Show, still the premier event of its kind in this country, opened yesterday at the fourth and current Madison Square Garden.
Now, as at its beginning, the horse show offers a kind of pageantry unmatched in New York.
Opening night was touched off by the parade of teams led by the United States Merchant Marine Academy band. Even before the splash of color brightened the Garden floor, a day‐long program had eased into night. The international jumping in the afternoon was won by John Whitaker for Britain. He role Singing Wind. Hedrik SchulzeSichoff was second for Germany and Buddy Brown of the United'States team. Was third.
In the evening jumper events, Sandsablaze, a 10‐year‐old gelding who suffered a bowed tendon a year ago in the Olympics, won the Whitney Stone Challenge Trophy with two clean runs —that is, runs around the course with no faults. He won in a jumpoff against. five other horses.
Sandsabaze was ridden by Brown, a 21‐year‐old member of the United States Equestrian Team. The handsome chestnut has won four events in a row, three in last week's Washington show and last night's. He has won blue ribbons in six of his last 12 events.
    Time Heals Tendon
A bowed tendon takes a long time to heal, and Brown has been the most patient of riders. He gave his horse a year to recover, a year in which he did nothing much but take it easy.
“We still give him days off as much as we can,” Brown said, “but once he gets in gear he's sound all the waу.”
In the first round, with 18 horses competing, sandsablaze was one of six with clean runs. In the jumpoff, there were four cleans.
sandsablaze was the last horse to enter the ring for the jumpoff. A few niinutes earlier another American horse, Jet Run, ridden by Michael Matz, had completed the jumpoff clean in swift 38 seconds.
“I didn't know what Michael's time was,” Brown said, “but I knew he had cut his corners sharp. I was determined to go as clean as I could. And every time I made a turn the opportunity was there for the next turn.”Earlier in the evening, Sombre, owned and ridden by Armand Leone, won the ,000 open jumper stake. For Leone, just two years out of the juniors, this was his first appearance in a National Horse Show jumper event."
